SODIUM PHOSPHATES

Sodium Hexametaphosphate SHMP

A condensed phosphate commonly assessed for sequestration, dispersion and mineral-management tasks.

INGREDIENT OVERVIEW

SHMP: product profile

Commercial SHMP is described in JECFA as sodium polyphosphate, glassy. Specify the commercial composition rather than assuming a pure, fixed ring molecule from the name.

Also known as: SHMP · Sodium polyphosphate, glassy · Graham's salt

SHMP is relevant when mineral interactions, dispersion or a phosphate system are part of the formulation problem. In a beverage, clarity and sediment may matter most; in a protein food, processing and texture introduce a different set of observations.

GRADE & PROCESS

Mineral management with a commercial polyphosphate

Choosing the material

Commercial SHMP is a glassy polyphosphate material. Its name does not define one pure ring compound or one chain-length distribution. Total phosphate, inactive phosphate and solution behavior describe different aspects of a grade.

Planning a useful comparison

Compare the actual process water, mineral load, pH and heating sequence. Record solution preparation, initial clarity and changes after the intended hold or storage period rather than judging only the freshly mixed sample.

GRADE & SPECIFICATION

Key parameters to confirm.

Review composition and solution behavior alongside purity. A general SHMP label does not settle the source’s phosphate distribution, dissolution behavior or suitability for the proposed food.

These are procurement questions, not a supplied specification. Units below indicate reporting context, not acceptance limits. Compare the current grade, source, document revision and test method before agreeing values.

Frame the mineral-management question

Describe the system: Describe the food matrix, water/mineral conditions, protein content, pH, heat history and the problem being observed.

Observe in a controlled trial: Compare clarity, sediment, dispersion or texture as relevant to the food. Keep the recipe and processing conditions constant; a useful result in one system does not establish universal stability.

A trial informs selection for that material and process; it is not a guarantee for a different grade or future batch.

PURCHASING QUESTIONS

SHMP: what to ask next.

Does the name identify one molecular composition?

Do not assume that it does. Request the source’s commercial identity and composition information. The published glassy-polyphosphate identity is a reference, not a specification for a particular offer.

What makes a pH comparison useful?

Use matching concentration, water, preparation and temperature, and note the method and document revision. An unqualified pH number cannot resolve a grade comparison.

When should I compare SHMP with STPP?

When both are candidates for the same stated problem. Test mineral interactions, dispersion or water-management objectives in the actual food rather than declaring either universally better.

Packaging, handling & ordering

Include your dissolution step and water conditions in the inquiry. Ask for the pack format and source-specific storage and shelf-life information alongside the selected grade.

Share your quantity and required delivery timing. Minimum order, sample terms, packing and the stated shelf life belong to the specific quotation and source records.

Identity reference points

These sources support technical identity checks. They do not establish a supplied grade, source approval or permission in every food or market.

DOCUMENT REQUEST

Request documents for SHMP.

Tell us the material form, intended use, destination market and document purpose. Request Current specification, representative COA and composition, pH or dissolution test information. Records depend on the proposed grade and source; any certificate applies only within its stated entity, site and product scope.
